The Run

The Run
On May 4th there will be a 5k walk/run.
This 5k stands for more than what you may think.

Each week 1-2 kids are diagnosed with cancer in central Virginia. They are about to encounter the hardest fight of their lifetime. They are going to give it their all and they are going to be warriors in the face of adversity.  They will triumph over the struggles, but they can’t do it alone. They need your help. Each and every individual out there. You can be a light for children with cancer and their families during their darkest days. You can show them your support by joining this fundraising event.

ASK is a non-profit organization in Richmond, VA  dedicated to making life better for kids with cancer. Each year they organize a 5k run and walk to raise the money necessary for them to continue to help children across central Virginia. To achieve their fundraising goal they need your help.

ASK started as a really small organization. ASK was founded in 1975 by a group of parents of the pediatric oncology patients in VCU Richmond, VA. These parents joined together to provide support to each other, to search for answers, and to deal with the devastating diagnosis.  They started to make small changes: collecting books, toys, and games to help their children pass the time in the clinic and they organized parent gatherings for support.  These parent volunteers became the founding members of ASK.  Their mission was simple and remains unchanged today: make life better for children with cancer (ASK Website).

Today they are Central Virginia’s largest nonprofit organization providing support services to the children with cancer and their families. Their support begins the moment of diagnosis and extends through treatment and beyond. They work diligently to help children and their families with all the needs they may have through and after treatment. ASK stands for assistance, support, and kindness; it sums up all the work that ASK does.

On May 4th ASK will have their annual 5k fun walk/run. This year they are trying to raise $155,000, and they are almost there. You can help them reach their goal. Making a difference starts with a single individual and you can make a difference now. By donating your money to ASK you are helping thousands of children who are fighting cancer and their families around Virginia.  Your money can and does make a difference.

The ASK 5k symbolizes more than just an ordinary 5k. It symbolizes an entire community standing up to cancer. When you run, you run with hundreds of others who believe in the same thing as you, which is that our community is stronger than cancer. By taking part in this 5k and donating you are joining the fight against cancer.

“Whenever I felt discouraged or felt like I wanted to give up, I would just look up at the medal and remind myself that I got this. I remember seeing all these beautiful survivors that gave me a feeling of hope. They helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel. I continue to go to the ASK walk not only because it is an amazing time, but because I hope that I can give that kind of hope to other fighters.” – ASK Kid Campbell
