“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”
Cancun was an incredible experience which I won’t be forgetting for a while.
Our flight left on the morning of 16th August. We did not get a direct flight to Cancun, we had to take a connecting flight from Charlotte to Cancun. It took approximately 5 hours to reach Cancun.
As we reached the Mexican airport we went through customs. Once outside the airport, we saw a lot of travel agents selling a lot of different types of tour packages. Our transportation was waiting to take us to the resort. It was about an hour drive from the airport. We stayed at an all-inclusive resort named Playacar Palace Resorts in Playa Del Carmen. As we were driving one thing that I noticed was the police. The police carry huge guns and they have very intense security in tourist spots.
In Mexico, people speak Spanish, and you probably already know that. My family doesn’t know any Spanish, and I can’t say that I do either. I did take Spanish in school for 3 years, so automatically whenever anyone said something in Spanish my family was expecting that I knew what they were talking about. In reality, I was as clueless as they were😂.
As we reached the resort we were immediately greeted with refreshing drinks. We checked into our room and freshened up. We went down to the lobby to find out what we could do in Cancun. That day we didn’t do much. We ate dinner in the resort’s restaurant and watched a show. We were told that the resort has a different show every day in the lobby. That day they had a Michael Jackson show. To my surprise, it wasn’t too bad.
The next day is when we started exploring. Well, we tried to start exploring. Let me explain. So first we ate breakfast at the resort. I must say that the food isn’t the best but their dessert is pretty good. I know eating dessert with breakfast isn’t the wisest choice, but it’s vacation. After breakfast, we went swimming with dolphins. It was an extraordinary experience. One which I will never forget. I wasn’t allowed to take pictures, but it was really fun. After that, we did a little shopping. Mexican markets are really cool.
Then… the day was cut short. Long story short, it rained. A lot. we couldn’t do much. Although, I did play volleyball.
For dinner, we ate at in an Italian restaurant. I don’t know why, but I ordered some octopus. It wasn’t too bad, but I wouldn’t eat it again.
On Saturday we took a ferry to Cozumel, it’s an island with beautiful beaches. We booked a snorkeling tour there. It was a four-hour group tour and they took us to three different places. Two snorkeling reefs, the Palancar and Columbia reefs, and El Cielo beach. The water was crystal clear and turquoise blue and it was extraordinarily beautiful! After snorkeling, we were exhausted so we took the ferry back to our resort in Playa del Carmen in Cancun. That night we ate dinner at a Japanese restaurant in the resort. Overall we did not like the food offered at the resort, they did not have many vegetarian options, but the drinks were delicious! I tried a few of the virgin mojitos and they were pretty good.
On our last full day in Cancun, we just relaxed. We went to a cenote. Simply said a cenote is a natural pit or sinkhole filled with water. It was a very beautiful place. Definitely, a must see if you go to Cancun. Cenotes are surrounded by high walls so the only options you have is either jump or go down a bunch of steps. Well, I jumped. I was a bit scared at first because I have never jumped from such a hight, but once I did it I really enjoyed it.
I also met many scuba divers. I want to try scuba diving some day. Seems fun
I was having a great time at the Cenote and then this happened…
Horrible…just horrible. They told everyone to get out because of lightning. At the end of the day, I only got about 20 minutes in the water. That just sucked. The Cenote was incredible, but the rain just killed the experience 😑. We were planning to stay longer but since the rain did not show any signs of stopping, we went back to the resort. In the evening we went shopping. There is a famous shopping market near our resort called the fifth avenue. It’s a long street with shops lined up on both the sides of the street, it goes on forever. It is full of street vendors selling anything and everything. There are many restaurants on the street as well.
I brought a nice hat. 😊
The next day we had to check out. We took the taxi at 10:30 to go to the airport. The flight was set to leave at 2:30 so we had a lot of waiting time. I used that time to write this piece for my blog, my experience in Cancun
I love traveling. When you travel you experience so many amazing things, new places, new culture. My dream is to take many more wonderful trips around the world. The world is such a beautiful place, we just need to get outside and experience it.
